Weighbridge & CAT Scale Calculator for Caravans and Trailers

Turn two or three weighbridge readings into tow ball mass, trailer weight and combined weight.

Method

The 3-reading weighbridge method

Reading A1. Car on bridge, van coupledReading B2. Car alone, trailer unhitchedReading C3. Van wheels on bridge, still coupled

Weighbridge readings

kg

Trailer wheels off the weighbridge

kg

Trailer unhitched and off the weighbridge

kg

Car off the bridge, trailer wheels on the bridge

Quick answer

Weigh the car on the bridge with the caravan coupled (A), the car alone (B) and the caravan's wheels on the bridge while coupled (C). Tow ball mass = A − B; ATM = C + (A − B); combined weight = A + C.

Worked example (AU)

A 3,210 kg, B 2,950 kg, C 2,490 kg → TBM 260 kg, ATM 2,750 kg, combined 5,700 kg.

Worked example (US CAT scale)

pass 1 steer 3,420 / drive 4,500 / trailer 6,600 lb, pass 2 steer 3,500 / drive 3,600 lb, pass 3 (WD released) steer 3,280 / drive 4,720 lb → trailer 7,420 lb, GCW 14,520 lb, tongue 900 lb (12.1 %), front-axle load restoration 63.6 %.

How it's calculated

Australia 3-reading method

• Tow ball mass (TBM) = A − B

• Gross trailer mass (GTM) = C

• Laden trailer (ATM) = C + (A − B)

• Combined weight = A + C

US CAT scale passes

• Gross combined weight (GCW) = steer₁ + drive₁ + trailer₁

• Truck alone = steer₂ + drive₂

• Trailer total = GCW − truck alone

• Tongue weight estimate (WD on) = (steer₁ + drive₁) − truck alone

• True tongue weight (Pass 3) = (steer₃ + drive₃) − truck alone

• Front-axle load restoration % = (steer₁ − steer₃) ÷ (steer₂ − steer₃) × 100
